Exhibition History

From the Reserve I

April 9 - August 3, 1994

Based in Liverpool between 1806 and 1825, Robert Salmon developed a style strongly influenced by 17th century Dutch marine painting, with its preference for low horizons, emphasis on atmospheric effects, and crystalline lighting. Salmon moved to Boston in 1828 and quickly became New England's most distinguished marine painter. Before his return to England in 1842, he taught several American artists, most notably Fitz Hugh Lane.
