This graceful portrait of a woman holding a covered alabaster jar depicts Mary Magdalene, a devout follower of Christ. The elaborate punched-gold background enhances her saintliness and complements her elongated features and fluid drapery. This small panel once appeared as the uppermost element on the side wing of an altarpiece, set above representations of other saints.
