European Galleries

This painting evokes the artist’s childhood and commemorates the death of her father. Like earlier portraits in this gallery, it includes distinctive costume and furnishings, as well as a setting that was significant to the subjects’ lives. Here Bruton chose not to portray herself and her father, but they are symbolized by the little girl’s party dress and comfortable armchair. The domestic interior is also populated by a pet dog, lace curtains, a clock, and a wrench, suggesting the comfort and security of family life. The composition employs a contemporary diptych (two-part) format, recalling a traditional portrait construction with connected images enacting a personal relationship.
