Exhibition History

Art and Design from 1900 to Now

I aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent. I weave the continent’s nature, art, and history within each piece I produce. Every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.

–Jomo Tariku

Note the graceful yet powerful legs of this chair and stool, the horn-like arms and spots of inlaid white holly wood. These works were inspired by the nyala, an antelope native to southeastern Africa. Jomo Tariku’s creations are so representative of modern African design, they were chosen for interior scenes in the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The wallpaper, entitled Meedo (meaning “comb” in the Ethiopian language Amharic), depicts afro combs crowned with heads featuring different hairstyles.

–Elizabeth A. Williams, David and Peggy Rockefeller Curator of Decorative Arts and Design
