Facing Artists

February 27 - July 31, 2009

This screenprint is part of a portfolio of ten prints, each based on a different Polaroid that Warhol took of Mick Jagger (English, born 1943), lead singer for the Rolling
Stones. The two had known each other since the early 1960s, when both were just gaining recognition. By the time of this project, they were good friends and famous. Portraiture, particularly of celebrities, was a major aspect of Warhol ’s work. Sessions began with sitting for Polaroids, which were then rephotographed, transferred to silkscreens, and printed onto paper, as here, or canvas. Warhol also made painted portraits of Jagger. A selection of Warhol’s Polaroids of other sitters can be found in the case in this gallery.
