Since ancient times, mortars and pestles have been used to crush and grind ingredients. Images of mortars and pestles can readily be found in Renaissance paintings, and a stylized depiction of the two objects continues to represent the pharmacy today. Cast in bronze in the grotesque style, the refined details of this highly decorated mortar include faces, garlands, birds, and the inscription Amor vincit omnia (Love conquers all).
