Inscription verso, bottom right in pencil: 25-

In signature cartouche above artist's name is an inscription shogatsu mikka Bishamon zukai explaining that the subject of the print is the messenger of Bishamon-ten performing the Heaping Rice Ceremony at Atago Shrine on the third day of the first month (see cat. file for Xerox of full description of the print from Smith and Poster, 100 Famous Views…); inscription upper left "an auspicious day…month (number of month cut off), 1857." While the figure is usually named the proprietor of the Atagoya teahouse on the top of the hill, Uspensky remarks that some scholars consider the inscription to refer to Hiroshige himself as the "messenger."
