Precious stones and minerals such as lapis lazuli and aquamarine quartz are not native to China, but they are highly prized there for their brilliant colors and reflective qualities. In both the covered jar and the landscape, carvers used the colors and translucencies of the stones to accentuate their designs. On the quartz jar, playful boys gathering pomegranates symbolize fertility, while the lapis landscape features bats and a crane—icons of good fortune.
