These very rare and sizable porcelain figures are among the limited number produced at the Vincennes Porcelain Manufactory, which just a few years later became sponsored by the French government and was renamed Sèvres. Drawing from Greek mythology, the gods Neptune and Amphitrite are accompanied by aquatic creatures and ride cresting waves that form the bases of the sculptures. The pair was originally owned by David Rockefeller’s aunt, Lucy Truman Aldrich, a Providence native who gifted nearly 200 mostly European porcelain ceramics to the RISD Museum.
