Modern and Contemporary Galleries

In this painting, Gerzso floats geometric layers across a shallow plane, meticulously separating them through inner borders and precise outlines. Within this map, each form consists of veils of related hues, demonstrating the artist’s intense interest in the emotional depth of color.

Gerzso began his career as a set designer for theater and film. His deep appreciation of the Mexican landscape revealed itself first in his stagecraft, then in his paintings. Born in Mexico City to European parents, Gerzso shared an interest in Surrealism with a circle of Mexican artists, but his abstract, architectural style was distinct from their imaginary narratives. Critic Dore Ashton described Gerzso’s work as an “atmosphere of the inner man who holds himself at a one-step removed from the world.”
