Commissioned by and gifted to members of the noble classes, gold portrait medallions embellished with jewels and enamelwork were a favorite way to recognize the recipient’s loyalty. Medallion designs were based on ancient coins, and Alessandro Abondio produced many examples for German and Austrian elites, including this one for Wolfgang Wilhelm, Count Palatine of Neuburg and Duke of Jülich and Berg. The reverse features Wilhelm’s crest with his motto, In Deo mea consolatio (My consolation is in God).
