Exhibition History

Facing Artists
Twentieth Century Portraits from the Collection
Feb 27, 2009 – Jul 31, 2009

Label copy

Arthur Swoger, known for his 1950s portraits of New York’s Abstract Expressionist artists, took numerous photographs of artists in their studios and at the Cedar

Tavern in Greenwich Village, a favorite gathering place. Philip Guston (American, born Canada, 1913-1980) was a frequent subject. In this image Guston gamely poses in front of one of his paintings from the period. Labels on the back of the photograph indicate that it may have been taken as a publicity shot.
