The striking design on this plate represents the union of Mary Hudson with James Colebrooke of Chilham Castle in Kent, England. Enameled scenes of the Chinese countryside contrast with raised bianco-sopra-bianco decoration. This white-on-white technique was first developed in Italy in the 1600s, revived more broadly in Europe in the 1700s, and soon after adapted by Chinese potters for Western markets. In addition to signaling the social status of the owners, the plate illustrates the fluid exchange of stylistic ideas that moved between Chinese and Western markets.
