Exhibition History

Facing Artists
Twentieth Century Portraits from the Collection
Feb 27, 2009 – Jul 31, 2009

Label copy

Beginning in the 1890s Odilon Redon, inspired by the painted profile portraits of Renaissance masters such as Sandro Botticelli and Hans Holbein, began to incorporate profile studies into his works. In 1900 he began the last of his many lithographic ventures, a series of eight profile portrait “medallions” of artists and musicians, all of them close friends. Redon’s delicate draftsmanship in this portrait of Edouard Vuillard (French, 1868-1940) displays an impressive graphic control and simple clarity.
