Facing Artists
Twentieth Century Portraits from the Collection

Label copy

In 1923 Edward Weston left his California studio with photographer Tina Modotti and sailed to Mexico, where the two lived for three years, befriending many artists

of the emergent Mexican art movement, including Diego Rivera, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and José Clemente Orozco (Mexican, 1883-1949). By 1928 Weston had

opened a portrait studio in Carmel, California, and in 1930 Orozco, one of the three most significant Mexican Muralists, was in California working on his first

American mural at Pomona College. In this photograph, Weston captured Orozco’s penetrating gaze, which echoes the critical intensity of his paintings.
