This bronze bust of a child represents a major theme in the work of Richmond Barthé, one of the first American sculptors to focus on Black figures. Born in Mississippi, Barthé studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After moving to New York in the late 1920s, he emerged as a leading artist of the Harlem Renaissance. At the height of Barthé’s career, an art critic for the New York Times observed that his work “penetrates far beneath the surface, honestly seeking essentials.” In this portrait of Julius Perkins Jr., Barthé captures the innocence and dignity of his youthful model.
