Exhibition History

Facing Artists
Twentieth Century Portraits from the Collection
Feb 27, 2009 – Jul 31, 2009

Label copy

Amadeo Modigliani lived and worked in Paris during the first two decades of the 20th century, a time of great artistic and intellectual ferment that launched the

avant-garde. Poet Leopold Zborowski (Polish, 1889-1932) became Modigliani’s dealer after 1915, providing him with a stipend and sitting for several portraits.

Modigliani’s signature elongations of the face and form do not fail to capture the gentle demeanor of his benefactor.
