Facing Artists

February 27 - July 31, 2009

Suzanne Valadon worked as a model in Paris beginning in the 1870s. Among the artists she posed for, Pierre-Auguste Renoir encouraged her to paint and Edgar
Degas taught her how to make prints, of which she produced just over thirty. The sitter for this portrait, Maurice Utrillo (French, 1883–1955), was Valadon’s son.
Although Utrillo led a difficult life fraught with addiction and social awkwardness, he achieved notable fame as a painter himself. Valadon presented Utrillo in isolation,
with her characteristic heavy contour lines and in the profile view favored by other artists of the period (see the portrait by Redon, at right).
