About

Shah Abbas (1588–1629), the fifth ruler of the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), is depicted here in a dynamic hunting scene, drawing his bow as he takes aim at a pair of ibex. Painted against a gray-blue background with mountains faintly delineated in gold, the miniature image is vividly animated, suggesting the king’s prowess as a masterful hunter. Emphasizing the ruler’s attributes rather than his likeness, the painter adhered to traditional conventions of idealizing royal figures.

Mounted on a sheet decorated with scrolling gold vines and flowers, this painting was part of an album that likely included other heroic scenes of the ruler.
