Facing Artists

February 27 - July 31, 2009

Ambroise Vollard (French, 1867–1939), the famed Paris dealer, patron, and publisher, was among the first to buy and exhibit Impressionist paintings, launching
the careers of such artists as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso. Picasso’s relationship with Vollard began when the artist was just nineteen and
continued until the end of Vollard’s life. In 1927 Vollard commissioned Picasso to create a series of etchings, known as the Vollard Suite, that eventually numbered
one hundred prints. This penetrating portrait, based on a full-figure photograph by Thérèse Bonney from around 1915, is one of the last in the series.
