European Galleries

This woman’s likeness once faced her husband’s, comprising a marriage portrait whose two-part format was introduced during the Renaissance. Its construction relates to religious diptychs, such as the ivory one in this case. This painting was displayed in the couple’s home, honoring their devotion to each other and the union of their families.

The sitter’s gaze suggests her religious piety. A single ring adorns her hands, but her fine cap and her robe’s soft fur lining proclaim her wealth and social standing. Her naturalness was achieved by the painter’s expert handling of oils and transparent glazes, for which Netherlandish artists were renowned.
