Compared to other nearby drawings, Wendy Edwards’s Rain is much more pared down, comprising two almond-shaped orange ovals joined together with delicate vertical lines. Yet Rain appears vibrant, lush, and full of kinetic energy. The way that Edwards has handled the pastel, pressing harder on the contours and softening both the top and bottom ends, focuses attention on the relationship between her drawing media and the materiality of the paper surface. Beyond serving as a study in color and surface, Rain invites us to dwell on the act of perception, imagining rain on leaves in the hazy glow of orange pastel.
