RISD Chain of Office
Gold, silver, pearls, amethyst, peacock feather, glass, and rutilated quartz
Chain and pendant 40.6 cm (16 inches)
Mary B. Jackson Fund
Made for the inauguration of RISD's 13th president, Lee Hall, Harold Schremmer’s chain of office is a creative and technical showpiece, utilizing numerous jewelry-making techniques. The chain’s design recalls bezel settings that typically encircle gems. Formed of hinged wings, the pendant opens to reveal a rounded rutilated-quartz stone. The pendant can also be detached from the chain to stand alone, taking on a sculptural form. As a special nod to Hall, who served as president from
1976 to 1983, Schremmer included a peacock feather to symbolize her interest in bird watching.
