Persian
Safavid Textile, late 1500s
Description
About
In this sumptuous textile, bands of feathers and leaves alternate with pink and blue chevrons on a gold ground. This quantity of metallic threads was immensely expensive to produce, which perfectly aligns with its courtly history. Acquired from famed Persian textile dealer Moustapha Avigdor (who also donated the Persian textile across the gallery), this work was probably made between 1587 and 1629, during the reign of Shah ‘Abbas I. Abbas was the fifth Safavid shah (king) of Iran. He moved the capital to the city of Isfahan and is known for building international trade agreements and for fostering carpet and textile production through state-run workshops.
