Saint Roch is shown here exposing a plague blister on his leg. He is associated with the bubonic plague, a disease that is estimated to have killed up to one third of the European population in the 1300s. Said to have been born in France about 200 years before this work was made, Saint Roch traveled to Rome to care for plague victims. In Rome he was stricken by the disease and saved by a dog who brought him bread. Lifelike painted sculptures portraying Saint Roch were made for display in churches throughout Western Europe.
