What appears, at first glance, to be a relatively simple patchwork design is elevated in the hands of expert enameler Kenneth F. Bates. A paint box of colors was plotted out here in tiny squares, the enamel layered over thin sheets of gold foil known as paillons to create a rich depth and shine. To further play up the inspiration of a comforter, as the title implies, Bates applied tiny lines of silver to suggest stitched fabric.
