Perception and Presence in Contemporary Drawing
Mar 05, 2022 – Sep 11, 2022

Label copy

Warmed by orange, yellow, and red, this drawing centers two presences: that of Satman Singh, one-time taxi driver and now co-owner of the popular Punjabi Deli, and the deli itself, a site of South Asian diasporic culture and community in New York City. Relying on photographs and personal narratives, Raina often explores South Asian diasporas, and particularly Sikh communities, in his work. Part of the Punjabi diaspora himself, Raina reflected on this focus: “It’s a subject matter that I’ve always been really interested in, mostly from a place of curiosity. You know, thinking about migration and how communities are formed and shaped and dispersed over time, and how diaspora is something like a place where different ways of thinking and different ideas can coexist.”
