Though he aspired to the grand tradition of history painting, William Etty is best known for his studies of the human figure and his use of sensuous color. Throughout his career, Etty continued to attend the Royal Academy's life class to draw from the model, even after having been made Royal Academician in 1828. His paintings of nudes, which although classically posed were unidealized, scandalized his fellow Academicians and the public attending the Royal Academy exhibitions, where they were displayed.
