  • Close view of a wall-mounted clear circular disc with loose, messy strokes of teal, green, blue, and purple paint. The surrounding discs fade softly into the bright, out-of-focus background.

I think we measure the world in things, in stuff, in numbers—time is numbers, money is numbers.... But we should understand the world in moments. In stories. In intangible, ephemeral, non-physical things. You don’t take any of this stuff with you: Your air fryer, your smoothie-maker.... They don’t go with you. That’s for sure.

–Ryan Gander

British artist Ryan Gander created a portrait of himself every day for one month, mixing his paints on these glass palettes. Presented in a calendar format, the palettes record the physical act of painting and the time required to make this installation and the unseen paintings.

His title, Self Portrait, encourages us to think about how we represent ourselves—in this case asking us to consider the importance of time and effort instead of the documentation of facial features.

–Dominic Molon, Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art
