Upholstered in intricately patterned needlework, this settee, like the writing table, stands on gracefully curved cabriole legs with pad feet. The availability of wood has always factored into furniture makers’ choices, and these works reflect an abundance of walnut wood in France in the early 1700s. The small table was designed with great functionality in mind—it could be closed when not in use and opened to provide a writing surface that rested on a swing-out fourth leg. It also includes a small drawer for storage and two pull-out slides to hold candles.
