Ancient Egyptian Galleries

Shabtis are small mummiform statuettes placed in tombs from the time of the Middle Kingdom to perform manual labor for the deceased in the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians considered agriculture as important in the afterlife as it was in everyday life. This shabti, holding a hoe for digging and a flail for threshing, is painted white to simulate a mummy's linen bandages.
