These are everyday shoulder cloths of the type worn by many people outside court circles. Although the patterning of both these textiles shows some influence from neighboring China, the patterning techniques are different. The end borders of the cloth on the left are patterned with supplementary wefts that carry completely across the back of the cloth from side to side, brought forward by the weaver to the face of the cloth when needed to create the pattern. The multicolor patterning of the cloth on the right is created by weaving each small supplementary weft color back and forth within each small pattern area.
