Satin stitch is composed of long stitches set parallel to one another and is used to fill in large or small spaces. A variation is long and short satin stitch, in which the inside of a motif is divided into several areas that are filled in with alternating long and short stitches. This technique is often used to create realistic texture in flower petals or in animal fur and feathers.
