Inscription verso, bottom center in pencil: EGR226[text and poems] Inscriptions on noren (the hanging door cloth behind the standing woman): Hono Godairiki Sakura-ya nai hanmoku? naka cho One cannot read the name of the woman because it is behind her."hanmoku? naka cho" is the address of the brothel Sakura-ya.Hono (translates to)dedication, offeringGodairiki(translates to)five guardian bodhisattva Sakura-ya (translates to) name of shop or house This print may be related to the kabuki play "Godairiki koi no fujime." A samurai stole money and spent it for a woman who works for the bath house Sakuraya. In the Edo period women wrote godairiki over the sealing of a letter to ensure it would not be opened.
