Sculptor Arnold Prince presents this female figure in a contrapposto stance, with most of her weight shifted to one foot and her shoulders turned at a different angle than her hips. Contrapposto has long been a favorite pose of artists, and Prince’s use of it combines traditional and modern approaches to sculptural representation.  His choice of steatite (soapstone) echoes the frequent use of this material in Egyptian statuary.

Prince emigrated from St. Kitts in the 1950s to study at the Art Students League of New York. One of RISD’s first African American professors, he was an important mentor to many students throughout his career.
