The floral and strapwork designs embellishing this goblet echo the decoration on metal presentation cups from the same era. Here, spiraling red and gold glass threads in the stem and finial radiate within the transparency of the glass. This type of covered cup was used for presenting an honored guest with wine, or for communal sipping at a banquet.

Until the 1600s, Venice dominated European glassmaking, but important Germanic workshops were established before the end of that century, especially in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and Silesia (now Poland). By the early 1700s, Bohemian glassmakers had developed a hard, clear, colorless glass that accommodated elaborate engraved decoration.
