Modern and Contemporary Galleries

The bowl of fruit and loaves of bread in this work suggestively evoke human anatomical forms, a recurring motif--and often a source of sly humor--in Bourgeois's later career. The rough surface textures and basic black and white palette emphasize the artist's choice to present this still-life as a three-dimensional sculpture, rather than in the more conventional form of a painting. Still Life reflects Bourgeois's pivotal role in combining abstract and representational sensibilities in art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
