This album is an example of the highly refined paintings produced to illustrate The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari). These works often predated the printmaking tradition by centuries and were a point of inspiration for Japanese printmakers.
This chapter of The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari) shows Ukifune (“boat upon the waters”) and Niou, Genji’s grandson, in a secluded cottage to which they have traveled in a snowstorm. Ukifune is becoming enamored of Niou; the love triangle in which she finds herself will soon result in a suicide attempt. The content of this chapter is often encapsulated in the depiction of a boat floating upon a snowy river.
