Label copy

This handcrafted wall hanging bustles with forest life. It teems with deer, rabbits, birds, dogs, and flowers, including foxglove, daffodils, and violets. This is an example of the verdure (green) or millefleur (thousand flowers) tapestry style, celebrated for its dynamic portrayal of the natural world. Around 1500, when this example was woven, hunting was both a popular European activity and a means of bringing food to the table. Tapestries like this one, created for secular spaces such private castles and great halls, aptly brought the abundance of the forest into the dining hall.
