About

Renaissance design was one of the sources for Neoclassical style, here interpreted with bountiful vegetation and winglike motifs. This silk-velvet example would have been used as a furnishing textile. Hung on a wall, the smooth ground of the fabric would reflect candlelight, and the cut and uncut velvet loops (ciselé) would add depth and drama to a room’s interior.
