Tradition and Innovation in American Watercolors

January 27 - April 11, 1999

In 1921, Burchfield moved to Buffalo, New York. Here he was attracted to the winter sights of the local waterfront and soon began to paint the freighters on Lake Erie. Their commerce restricted by the lake's icy manacles, the unmoving ships frequently became subjects for the artist. Burchfield made the frame on this drawing, although he later commented that it restricted the work a bit. The drawing and frame, long apart, have been reunited for this exhibition.
