About
This wallpaper design features a female bust with attributes associated with Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture. The sheaf of wheat bound by crossed sickles, grapevines, kylix (drinking cup), and oinochoe (wine jug) indicates a bountiful harvest.
This was one of six panels depicting trophy busts, which alternated with panels of mythological scenes that included the Muses and the Judgment of Paris. Each
scene in the series was created in monochromatic shades of gray, or grisaille, in an imitation of marble sculpture. The use of classical imagery gained prominence after the rediscovery of the Roman sites Herculaneum and Pompeii in 1713 and 1748.
