Philip Gell, of Hopton Hall in Derbyshire, was the owner of this English suit. The Geils were not an aristocratic family, but were part of England's middle class. Suits, such as this, were not only adopted by aristocrats, but were the fashion among this class, who preferred this simpler, more somber style, suited to life in the country.
