WIth the rise of an intensely personal strain of devotional Hinduism, Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, became one of the most widely worshipped deities in India. This hanging was used in the rituals of th sect founded by Vallabhacarya in the late 15th century and its central figure represents the actual black stone image of Krishna brought to its main temple in Nathadwara in Rajasthan under miraculous circumstances in 1691. Hangings such as this one are used behind the icon and act as a stage set for a veariety of seasonal ceremonies.
