  • A black, curved abstract shape lies at the center of a piece of wrinkled tissue paper. Zig-zagging lines of thread intersect over and beyond the shape.

Moving past this drawing, you might detect a familiar crinkling sound. This is because artist Dominic Quagliozzi made this work using the kind of tissue paper that lines exam tables in doctor’s offices and hospitals. Throughout the treatment of his cystic fibrosis, Quagliozzi has spent a lot of time around this type of paper, and in this work he invokes the vulnerability experienced in medical spaces. “The chronically ill and disabled community . . . are always having to prove our worth or show that we matter, when in reality, we are enough as is,” he explains. “Using materials from my hospital stays, . . . I wanted to present my reality. These are the materials of my life-it just so happened that COVID has now made those materials much more universal.”
