Modern and Contemporary Galleries

Auguste Delaherche left the Parisian art scene for a rural studio in Armentières, where he could study local pottery traditions. He soon abandoned the practice of using assistants to throw his pots and independently became one of the leading masters of art pottery in 20th-century France. Living the Arts and Crafts Movement ideal of an artist intimately connected to each stage of production, Delaherche maintained intimate contact with his clay, made no duplicates, and destroyed every piece of pottery that did not meet his high standards. This group of vases shows Delaherche’s sophisticated earthy texture, his preference for robust shapes, and the results of his experimentation in a wide variety of sparkling glazes.
