Centuries of cultural wealth lured tourists to Venice in the 1700s. No other city in Europe rivaled the theatrical setting of its geography and architecture. Artists such as Francesco Tironi perfected a type of urban landscape painting that served collectors’ desires to possess a part of this unique travel experience. Called vedute (views), these compositions captured the light and movement of Venice and documented the social and commercial activities of its canals. This view of the northern end of the Grand Canal features the church façades of the Scalzi at far right and Santa Lucia at center.
