Johanna Sibylla Küssell

This etching is part of a series depicting views of Rome and Tivoli, based on earlier prints by the French artist Israël Silvestre. Several decades after their original publication, Johanna Sibylla Küssell copied these works onto new etching plates and printed them in her family’s printmaking business, which was known for reproducing French and Dutch designs and disseminating these regional styles throughout Europe. Though the practice of copying was common, it is notable that Küssell has replaced Silvestre’s signature on the title page with her own, thereby declaring some ownership of the work.
