The inscription at the lower right informs us that this piece was made “July 26 8 PMtempestuous rainy evening.” Its simplified, banded composition – a spare, open foreground, a line of trees convincingly indicated with dabs of color in the middle ground, and stripes of dark clouds and sunlight in the distance – give the work a contemporary feel. It is one of two sheets in the Museum collection from a series of Kent scenes, likely from a sketchbook.
