About

In this intimate scene a young female heroine (nayika) adjusts her necklace in front of a mirror, awaiting the arrival of her lover. An illustration from the Garland of Musical Modes (Ragamala), these scenes are designed to visualize music and poetry, evoking the mood associated with a particular musical mode (raga). Depicted here is a raga in the female mode, a ragini, personified by the expectant young woman.
